EXCERPT FROM CHICANO TODAY
September 27 The Classroom
W hen I started teaching computers through a community college adult education program, my first assignment was to work with minors, mostly 17 and 18 years old at the local city jail. Everyday, I walked into the office to check my messages before walking into the actual computer lab inside of the jail module. I would always read this message which someone posted on the bulletin board.
“Fifty years from now it will not matter what kind of car you drove, what kind of house you lived in, how much you had in your bank account, nor what your clothes looked like. But the world will be a little better because you were important in the life of a child.” Anonymous
These words always inspired me before I walked into the computer lab to teach these youth everyday for 7 months. I taught them Microsoft PowerPoint, Publisher, Word, and Excel.
Today and every day as you walk into your ‘classroom’ whatever and wherever it is, remember these lines too.
I hope these words will inspire you too as you walk out to face your own ‘children, students or market.’
